Obituary of Leroy Matthews

Leroy Matthews, age 69, a former Gary resident for over 60 years, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, Gary, IN. He was also a member of Open Door Church, COGIC since the late 1970s. LeRoy was the youngest of 5 children born to the union of Alfred Edsel Sr. and Josephine Matthews on March 6, 1953. He worked for over 20 years for Youngstown Steel (aka LTV Steel) in East Chicago, IN and was Ironworker by trade. He was also a Real Estate Broker for several years and worked for UPS for several years. In 1976, he married Michelle and of that union are 2 children. He is survived by his son, Lee (Regina) Matthews of Indianapolis, IN and daughter, L’Oreal (David) McDonald of Gary, IN; his brothers, Bennie (Mary) Matthews of Van Nuys, CA; Alfred Matthews Jr of Chicago, IL; and sisters Ernestine (James – dec.) Lawton of San Antonio, TX and Christine Matthews of Gary, IN; and 4 grandchildren, Jordyn, Joshua, Jonah and Luka and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Memorial services will be held at Serenity Funeral Services, 6202 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268. Visitation will be December 29, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
