Obituary of Phyllis S. Dohm

Phyllis S. Dohm, 76, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 18, 2020, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. She was born on November 7, 1943, in Hartford City, Indiana and resided most of her adult life more recently in Edinburgh and previously in Whitestown. Phyl, as she was known to her family and friends, graduated from Hartford City High School and earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from Ball State University. She was particularly gifted and trained at teaching special education and orthopedically handicapped children. Prior to and after raising her children, she worked as a teacher for Atterbury Job Corps Center and Indianapolis Public Schools. She retired from the latter. Phyl was an incredibly generous person. If you were in need, she was quick to lend or donate or even bring you into her home. She adopted many furry friends as well. She volunteered her time teaching literacy, English as a Second Language, and also taught hundreds of truck drivers to pass their CDL written exams. She was recognized in 1991 by Boone County Project Literacy as its volunteer of the year. Phyllis is survived by her daughter April (Jason) Kern of New Braunfels, TX, and son Stephen (Amy) Dohm of Zionsville, and four grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Sylvia Dunakin of Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral and Cremation Services, 6202 Michigan Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46268. Visitation will be held prior to services from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent Foundation (for St. Vincent Hospice) or Alzheimer’s Association.
